Controlling and Taking Advantage of Liquid Hydrogen’s Energy Potential Through Small-Scale Liquefaction and Controlled Storage

Liquid hydrogen (LH2) has numerous benefits that make it the perfect energy carrier of the future. Being more energy-dense and of the highest purity, it offers more energy in a smaller volume, providing more power and enhanced performance, while remaining completely renewable and eco-friendly.

To harness and take advantage of the benefits of LH2, Controlled Storage is the key aspect in liquefaction and reducing or eliminating hydrogen loss and ensuring its longevity while being stored. Trying to store hydrogen in its liquid form at room temperature would be like, using an analogy, preventing water from boiling on an extremely hot stove. To minimize hydrogen boiloff, innovations pursuing zero-loss storage solutions have resulted in advancements in Cryogenic Controlled Storage systems. Cryogenic controlled storage systems act more like refrigerators by keeping hydrogen long-term at cryogenic temperatures. This enhanced approach by GenH2 on an Integrated Refrigeration and Storage (IRaS) system offers complete control over the stored LH2.This level of control allows for on-demand, greater operational efficiency, flexibility in ground operations, and overall enhanced performance.

Controlled storage systems at larger scales need vast amounts of space and resources to function. Recent advancements by GenH2 in controlled storage at a smaller scale in the light-scale LS20 unit have allowed for the expansion of liquid hydrogen usage which will better aid in transporting liquid hydrogen to areas where it is needed on demand. Low refrigeration requirements to achieve zero boil-off is a big advantage of the controlled storage system. Other important advantages of light-scale or small-scale hydrogen systems exist within their portability and ease of integration, as these systems can be built in or moved to diverse geographical or remote locations that are not reachable by larger units and can assist in liquid hydrogen distribution. Additional benefits include functioning as a local distribution solution for densified hydrogen and acting as a medium for an individual-scale power storage system. The smooth spread and integration of controlled storage and transfer small-scale systems will lead to quicker adoption of hydrogen systems, accelerating the global transition to green energy.

GenH2 leads the way in developing hydrogen infrastructure solutions through small, light-scale systems. The LS20 Mobile Liquefaction and Storage unit is the predecessor to GenH2’s flagship product, liquid hydrogen 1 tonne-per-day (1TPD) controlled storage system which will take full advantage of the innovations of combining safely controlled and small-scale industrial scale storage, with priorities in reliability, modularity, lower cost, lack of restrictions on-site location, and the ability to make practical use of renewable energy.
