Why Industries are Jumping to Light-scale Hydrogen Systems
By: GenH2 Staff
Read Time: 2 minutes

It was once widely believed that the adoption of hydrogen would rely solely on the implementation of large-scale infrastructure. But advancements in light-scale systems are changing the dynamics and proving to be vital in accelerating hydrogens accessibility. Although large-scale hydrogen systems are a big part of the hydrogen economy and allow for more hydrogen to be produced, there are still hurdles to overcome in the process of storing, transporting and transferring it to where it is needed.

Technological breakthroughs in smaller scale hydrogen systems have led to the development of more compact, light-scale hydrogen systems for mobility and on-demand availability. These systems address flexibility for liquid hydrogen storage and transport options while also providing benefits in time-to-market or new markets adoption. These breakthroughs are crucial to the worldwide energy infrastructure necessary to keep up with the growing hydrogen economy demand. Light-scale systems allow for portions of the global market to get a foothold in renewable power generation and storage, assisting in the acceleration of the world’s transition to clean renewable energy.

The light-scale liquid hydrogen units provide supply and infrastructure solutions in areas where larger systems would not meet the requirements and geographical or space limitations. Due to their smaller footprint, these units will allow liquid hydrogen to serve as the energy carrier for backup power for areas in need of disaster relief, or as a power provider for parts of the world too remote to accommodate larger infrastructure systems. The light-scale, on-site liquid hydrogen supply units result in short distances from supplier to user, time-savings, and less energy consumption for transporting and long-term controlled storage.  These units would also allow users the option in achieving energy carrier independence, as users would be able to produce and store their own energy carrier for power on privately owned off-grid systems.

GenH2’s mission is to create infrastructure solutions for the light-scale liquefaction and storage of hydrogen. Liquefying hydrogen increases its energy density, while properly storing liquid hydrogen is essential to ensure its longevity.
